Blown Fiberglass Insulation for Midwest Attics and Walls

From drafty winters in your hundred-year-old farmhouse to sweltering summers in your mid-century rancher, old homes in Indiana and Ohio are notorious for being poorly insulated.

In many cases, old and packed-down insulation in the attic – or no insulation at all – are the primary factor in making your home a nightmare to heat or cool. New insulation, even in tough-to-reach spots, can be a wallet-saver, helping you maintain a comfortable, energy efficient home year-round.

If you’re in central Indiana or western Ohio and considering insulation, blown fiberglass might be the perfect solution.

Insulation For Retrofits and New Buildings

Stoltzfus Insulation provides the entire gamut of insulation services, from closed cell spray foam to blown fiberglass. And while closed cell foam is often the most insulative, price or the inability to get into existing walls or under attic floors (spray foam requires open wall cavities) sometimes makes blown fiberglass the ideal option.

Blown fiberglass is a unique insulative solution to tough-to-reach spots as it can be blown into wall or roof cavities without removing drywall. Two small holes and our state-of-the-art blower make this easier than ever.

Save as much as 40% on your energy bills with blown fiberglass by Stoltzfus Insulation.

When Blown Fiberglass Is The Right Insulation

Great for New Construction

Blown fiberglass insulation is also great for over top of ceilings. Rather than use closed cell foam in your attic ceiling or roofline, we can blow fiberglass over the top of your ceiling, adding 10 to 16 inches of this high-quality insulation and immense heat and cooling protection that won’t sag or condense over time.

Great for Budgets

Blown fiberglass is a compelling alternative to spray foam when accessibility is right, making for a fast, easy, and affordable insulation fix. We can blow 16 inches of fiberglass over top of a ceiling for less than it costs to apply 4 inches of spray foam!

We tend to recommend fiberglass over cellulose.

Cellulose is finely chopped newspaper mixed with fire retardant chemicals. Unfortunately, cellulose is extremely dusty to install, making any space where we’re working dirty, which is one reason we avoid it. But cellulose also settles over time, reducing its insulative characteristics.

Fiberglass, by contrast, creates virtually no dust during installation and has a slightly higher R-value than blown cellulose.

Estimates are that 60% or more of a home’s heat is lost “out the top”, or through the roof. Insulating your attic or beneath your roof, particularly if you have nothing there currently, is the number one thing to do to improve your home’s ability to retain warm or cool air, and this will have an immediate impact on your energy bills.

For most modern homes with 2×4 stud framing, we can get about 3.5 inches of fiberglass insulation behind your drywall and into your walls. This is an R-value of about 7.5.

For open attics where space is not an issue, we strive for 16 inches of blown fiberglass to achieve a meaningful R-value of around 49.

Wondering if insulating your walls or attic could improve your energy efficiency?
